Fire resistance design method for reinforced concrete beams to evaluate fire-resistance rating

In this paper, performance based a fire resistance design method for evaluating the flexural carrying capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams has been proposed. The developed method is associated with a simple heat transfer model for RC beams subjected to the unsteady state heat transfer at transient heating boundary condition with three basic heating mechanism, i.e., conduction, convection and radiation. The validity and verification of the fire resistance design method and heat transfer model have been established with the experimentally measured and compiled database. Parametric studies also conducted to investigate the fire-resistance rating of designed RC beams and comparative appraisal of existing codes practices has been examined. Through the results of the fire resistance design method, it reveals that the developed method is capable to predicts fire-resistance rating of RC beams at fire scenarios, nominal cover, type of aggregate and thermal-induced concrete properties.
