Weather in my life – Maureen Sweeney
Weather ( IF 1.9 ) Pub Date : 2021-05-11 , DOI: 10.1002/wea.4002

Mrs Maureen Sweeney played a small but no less significant role in the success of D‐Day (6 June 1944), as it was her meteorological observations that directly contributed firstly to the weather forecast that postponed it, and then later her observations that identified a window of opportunity for the Allied Forces. It is quite a fascinating and remarkable story to tell.

Maureen and Ted Sweeney on their wedding day.

The Republic of Ireland was neutral in World War 2, but it did permit the sharing of met observations with Britain. Maureen was a sub‐postmistress at Blacksod, a remote area of coastal County Mayo in the far west of Ireland. Her role included the taking and sending of meteorological observations from the weather station at Blacksod Post Office. It was her readings, in particular the one she took at 0100h on 3 June 1944 (on the morning of her 21st birthday!) that first alerted the Allies to the approaching storm that delayed D‐Day.

The Editors of Weather are therefore proud and delighted to present Maureen Sweeney's unique story to you this month.

(Maureen Sweeney)
