Long-Term Dynamics of the Properties of Ionospheric F 2-Layer Disturbances in Various Regions

Abstract

A large array of experimental data from observations of ionospheric vertical sounding stations located in different regions of the Earth has been used to study the features of long-term (1948–2019) time series of relative variations in the critical frequencies of the ionospheric F2 layer during disturbances. The ionospheric disturbance parameters, such as the amplitudes of positive disturbances recorded at all stations, have demonstrated a statistically significant increase since the 1970s and 1980s. The annual numbers of ionospheric disturbances unrelated to geomagnetic activity also increase. The revealed effects may be associated with atmospheric trends of natural and anthropogenic origin, which enhance the dynamic regime at the F2 layer heights.
