Molecular reorientation behavior of oligothiophene-doped polymer-stabilized liquid crystals irradiated with collimated laser beam

Abstract

The irradiation of oligothiophene-doped liquid crystals (LCs) with a linearly polarized laser beam induces homeotropic-to-planar director reorientation. However, such molecular reorientation was explored only with a focused laser beam, which requires a lens and consequently limits their application. We report photoinduced molecular reorientation behavior of oligothiophene-doped LCs by irradiation with a collimated laser beam. We prepared the homeotropic aligned oligothiophene-doped LC and irradiated the sample with collimated and focused laser beams. As a result, the irradiation with a collimated beam induced molecular reorientation of LCs and its threshold intensity became lower than that of focused laser beam irradiation.
