Mathematical modeling of double-stage humidification compression desalination: Series and parallel configurations

The performance of a type of humidification-dehumidification desalination, where dehumidification is accomplished by compression is assessed. This desalination system is named humidification compression. Since the process sequence has a major effect on the system performance, in this study, two double-stage humidification compression configurations, where humidification columns operate at different pressures, are proposed and assessed. The mathematical models are developed for all parts of the system to assess the effect of operating conditions on these configurations. The modeling results are evaluated by experimental data, and the results indicate good conformity between modeling and experimental data. The pressure effect of the second humidification column, the temperature difference in the heat exchanger, and the water flow fraction to the first humidification column on the system performance are assessed. It is observed that water productivity and energy efficiency for the parallel configuration are higher than those of the series configuration under all operating conditions.
