Thermo-Hydraulic Study of MgB2 Superconducting Feeder for SST-1 Tokamak

Better cryo-stability is mandatory for any superconducting (SC) feeders system of fusion devices as the large amount of the magnet-stored energy can be safely dumped via feeder path only. Magnesium diboride (MgB 2 ) as a feeder may provide an innovative solution in lieu of low temperature superconductor. It has a critical SC transition temperature ( TC ) of 39 K, ductile nature, and ease of availability at a relatively lower cost. SST-1 Tokamak at IPR India utilizes NbTi/Cu based cable-in-conduit conductors for its SC feeders rated at 10 kA and designed to be cooled using forced-flow helium at 4.5 K, 0.4 MPa. In order to assess the suitability of MgB 2 as a feeder, we report a thermo-hydraulic study of 10 kA rated SC feeders for SST-1. The results show that MgB 2 SC feeders can provide benefits of higher temperature margin at a lower mass flow rate with reduced pressure drop and the cryo-plant capacity savings in comparison to existing NbTi-based feeders.
