Effects of three strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens to soil-borne fungal pathogens and silkworm, Bombyx mori

The antagonistic effect of Pseudomonas fluorescens (Pf) against soil borne fungal pathogen and reproductive toxicity of Pf to silkworm, Bombyx mori L. was studied. The antagonistic property of Pseudomonas fluorescens isolates viz., Pseudomonas fluorescens 5 (Pf 5), Pseudomonas fluorescens 18 (Pf 18) and Pseudomonas fluorescens 25 (Pf 25) was evaluated by in vitro dual culture method against soil-borne fungal pulse pathogens viz., Fusarium spp., Alternaria alternata, Macrophomina phaseolina and Rhizoctonia solani. Carbendazim 50% W.P. served as positive standard whereas fungal pathogen without antagonist (Pf) was maintained as control group. Mycelia growth was recorded in all the treatment groups and control. The results of different isolates were statistically compared by one-way ANOVA. The percentage mycelia growth inhibition over control was recorded in the order of Carbendazim > Pf 5 > Pf 25 > Pf 18 against the fungal pathogens tested. Toxicity to silkworm was evaluated by Leaf Dip Method. The treatments tested were Pf 5, Pf 18, Pf 25 @ 108 cfu/mL and Dimethoate 30% EC was used as positive standard. Leaves dipped in deionized water served as a control. There is no significant difference recorded in treatments on mortality, larval duration and cocoon weight data compared to control. Feed consumption was also on par with the control. Therefore, the selected isolates were found to inhibit soil borne fungal growth and non-toxic to silkworm without affecting larval growth and cocoon weight under the laboratory conditions tested.
