ABSTRACT

The present study examined the association between home motor affordances and motor skill development in daycare and non-daycare attending children. The sample consisted of 247 families with children aged 18–42-months. Homes were assessed using the Persian translation of the Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development-Self-Report (AHEMD), and motor skills were evaluated with the Test of Gross Motor Development – 2 (TGMD-2). Results indicated that the daycare group revealed higher AHEMD scores in Inside Space, Fine- and Gross-Motor Toys, whereas the non-daycare children obtained high scores in Variety of Stimulation. There was also a significant relationship between the two groups for motor skills. The level of affordances in the home and motor skill development were higher for the daycare group. In summary, compared to children that did not attend daycare, the homes of children that attended daycare were provided more motor affordances, opportunities, and advantages with the potential to improve motor development.
