In Vitro Antioxidant Properties of New Zealand Hass Avocado Byproduct (Peel and Seed) Fractions

In avocado (Persea americana) oil production, there is a large amount of polyphenol rich biowaste (seed and peel), which could be a potential source of bioactive molecules. The utilization of avocado seed and peel could promote avocado industry growth. Furthermore, there has been little study about avocado byproducts produced in New Zealand (NZ). Therefore, this study explores the antioxidant properties of NZ Hass avocado byproducts. The total antioxidant capacity was evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays, and the total polyphenol content of avocado byproduct extracts was measured by the Folin–Ciocalteu assay. The procyanidin B2 content was investigated by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). In the Soxhlet extraction study, the total polyphenol content (TPC) of the ripe seed extract (64.55 mg GAEs/g) was higher than the other extracts. The seed extracts showed higher antioxidant activity than the peel extracts. In the flash chromatography separation study, the low polarity fraction (FLP) of the ripe peel had the highest DPPH and ABTS scavenging capacities (90 ± 0.08%; 93 ± 0.05%). This research provides valuable evidence to support the NZ-avocado byproducts as a source of antioxidants in the future.
