New Dihydropyrrole-Substituted Epicatechins from Sun-Dried Dongting-Biluochun Tea Leaves and Their Inhibitory Activities on Acetylcholinesterase

Although Dongting-Biluochun tea is one of the top 10 teas in China, little research has been done on its chemical composition. The phytochemical study of leaves of Dongting-Biluochun tea resulted in the isolation of two new dihydropyrrole-substituted epicatechins, (−)-6-(5″R)-2″-ethoxy-3″,4″-dihydro-2H-pyrrole-epicatechin-3-gallate (1) and (−)-6-(5″R)-2″-ethoxy-3″,4″-dihydro-2H-pyrrole-epicatechin (2), along with two known catechins, epicatechin-3-gallate (3) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (4). The structures of compounds 1–4 were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical analysis. In addition, bioactivity testing revealed that compounds 1, 3, and 4 possess strong acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 42.38, 19.5, and 78.79 μM, respectively.
