Spectacular exposures of the Mamonia Mélange are studied in the Petra tou Romiou area, in southwestern Cyprus, with aim to distinguish the nature and age assignment of this chaotic complex. It is a typical tectonic mélange made up of clayey/silty matrix and blocks, which are mainly derived from the sedimentary and volcano-sedimentary rocks of the Ayios Photios and Dhiarizos groups respectively, as well as subordinate blocks derived from the Troodos Ophiolite Complex. The youngest blocks within the Mamonia Mélange are comprised by cherts that exhibit a well-preserved lower Turonian radiolarian assemblage. In the studied area, the tectonic mélange is overlain with clear unconformity by the upper Campanian–lower Maastrichtian bentonitic clays of the Kannaviou Formation. This indicate that the Mamonia Mélange was formed between the Turonian to Campanian period, as a result of the collision and juxtaposition of the Mamonia Complex with the Troodos Ophiolite Complex.
