ABSTRACT

This study explores the friendship alliances of Anna Maria van Schurman in her archived correspondence with three women scholars – Marie du Moulin, Marie de Gournay, and Dorothy Moore – and two women artists – the portraitist Madame Coutel, and the singer Utricia Ogle. It will argue two main points: firstly, that Van Schurman’s study and valuing of Hebrew were determining factors either in bringing her closer to or in distancing her from a friendship alliance; and, secondly, that each of the women mentioned performed a distinct role in Van Schurman’s strategic search for the most influential male mentors and supporters in the Republic of Letters.
