Thirty to fifty percent of youth with epilepsy experience deficits in executive functioning (EF; Hermann et al., 2008; Modi et al., 2018), which includes skills such as planning, organization, working memory, initiation, problem-solving, and self-regulation (Lezak et al., 2004). In daily life, problems in these areas can manifest as forgetting to write down homework assignments or take medications, having a messy bedroom or backpack, misplacing personal items, or experiencing difficulties managing frustration. Thus, EF difficulties can have a cascading impact, negatively affecting school performance, emotional and behavioral functioning, and quality of life (Fastenau et al., 2004; Modi et al., 2019a). These psychosocial sequelae necessitate the development and implementation of interventions that improve EF in youth with epilepsy, as this could optimize overall functioning in this population.
