ABSTRACT

Pulsed IR lasers were employed to irradiate high boiling elements, such as C, Mo, Ta, W and Re, in high vacuum. The ablation yield, given in terms of removed mass per pulse, was investigated using a ns laser at intensities of the order of 1010 W/cm2 and a sub-ns laser operating at about 1015 W/cm2. The produced plasma in high vacuum was studied by the time-of-flight measurements of emitted ions. The plasma-accelerated particles can be deposited and implanted on a near substrate to form a very adherent thin film useful for applications involving high temperatures and hard materials.
