Different Approaches to Purify the 185.7 keV of 235 U from Contribution of Another Overlapping γ-Transition

Abstract

As a matter of fact, overlapping of γ-transitions of different isotopes is a source of error and obstacle to get accurate and confident results. It must be considered and corrected for. In this work, different approaches are given to purify the gamma line 185.71 keV of 235U from any contribution and overlapping due to 186.21 keV of 226Ra. The approaches were applied on natural environmental samples. A highly efficient HPGe detector with its electronics was used for identifying and determination of 235U, 238U and 226Ra based on their gamma transitions. The calculated 235U/238U activity ratios after correction and removing contribution of 186.21 keV of 226Ra were found to be optimal and typical natural values; 0.046. The results are tabulated and depicted for natural ore samples, phosphate and black sand samples.
