Fabrication of lightweight and robust cryogel with opposite wettability for effective oil-water separation via sustainable and toxic-free approach

A porous cryogel with opposing wettability was successfully fabricated using cellulose acetate and polyvinyl alcohol through a simple freeze-drying method for oil-water separation application. It was made by means of water as the medium of mixing to eliminate the use of any hazardous organic solvents which makes it a completely toxic-free and environmentally friendly material. The prepared material was treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to produced hydroxyl groups on the pore structure of the cryogel which led to the increase of its hydrophilicity. On the other hand, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) was used to functionalize the cryogel giving its framework structure an enhanced hydrophobic property. These techniques were carried out to effectively separate water and oil mixture. Moreover, it has high reusability, flexibility, sustainability, durability, and robustness even when exposed to various types of oil due to its exceptional physical properties and is also benign and ecological because of its biodegradability and nontoxicity.
