A Study of Resistance to Calcification of Bovine Jugular Veins with Coatings Deposited from Solutions in Carbonic Acid

Abstract

The resistance to calcification of bovine jugular veins (BJVs) coated by chitosan or bisphosphonate deposited from solutions in water/subcritical carbon dioxide (carbonic acid) system was studied for the first time. Samples of veins subjected to hybrid decellularization in supercritical CO2 and coated by chitosan and bisphosphonate deposited from solutions in carbonic acid at elevated pressure (P = 30 MPa) and at room temperature were studied. The calcification of the treated veins, especially bisphosphonate-coated ones, was found to decrease by Δ = 90 ± 5%, p < 0.05, in comparison with the generally accepted gold standard (BJVs cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and decellularized with sodium dodecyl sulfate). It was found that significant suppression of BJV calcification requires a combination of properties of the coating, namely, the ability to cover free aldehyde groups and the ability to suppress the growth of pathogenic microflora (antimicrobial activity).
