ABSTRACT
This viewpoint discusses the legacy that my grandmother, Norah Dacre Fox (aka Norah Elam), left to me as a result of her political campaigning during the period 1900-1945. Norah, together with Mary Richardson (infamous for slashing the Rokeby Venus) and Mary Allen (awarded an OBE in 1917 for services to women's policing) were three high-profile suffragettes who joined the British Union of Fascists (BUF) in the 1930s. After researching and uncovering the full extent of Norah's public career, it left me with a burning question. How could a woman who fought for the democratic right for women to vote take a decision twenty years later to fight in the ranks of a profoundly undemocratic political party?
