Sexual violence is prevalent in the Indian diaspora; however, little is known about how to support survivors. Feminist theory frames the experience of sexual violence as that of power and the social messages that the survivor receives. This article discusses the intersecting messages experienced by members of the diaspora: both from Indian and western culture. Framed through a feminist theoretical lens, this article discusses cultural messages and acculturation that inform the experience of sexual violence for a survivor. These messages are then synthesized to understand their impact on support seeking and coping. Considerations for counselors are discussed.
