Obtaining phenolic compounds from iraca waste ( Carludovica palmata Ruiz & Pav) through ultrasound-assisted extraction

This study aimed to determine the phenolic content and biological activity of ethanolic extracts from iraca waste (Carludovica palmata Ruiz & Pav) obtained through ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). The effects of temperature (30 °C and 60 °C), amplitude (20%, 40%, and 60%), and extraction time (2, 10, and 20 min) on the total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of the extracts were evaluated. Soxhlet extraction and low-pressure solvent extraction (LPSE) were conducted to compare their results with that of UAE. Chlorogenic and gallic acids were more abundant than other phenolic compounds (PC) in the extracts, with concentrations of 106.78 and 88.75 mg 10 g−1, respectively. Higher values of TPC (244.69 mg 100 g−1) and AC (69.23% ± 4.60 inhibition) were obtained when the extraction process was performed at 60 °C, 10 min, and 40% amplitude. The antimicrobial activity of the extract obtained under the best process conditions was evaluated. Antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was observed when in concentrations of 50% w/v and 20% w/v, respectively. The PC present in the extracts and their biological activity were affected by the extraction parameters. Results show that PC from iraca waste infructescence can be extracted through UAE using shorter extraction times to preserve the integrity of the compounds.
