Graduate school is one of the most discussed topics in the Student Angle Column of Fisheries (Carlson et al. 2015a). A graduate degree has gradually become the norm for most fisheries professionals (Grossman 1998; Zale et al. 2000; Kaemingk et al. 2013). Previous Fisheries articles have noted that finding an exciting project, having compatibility with an advisor, and access to opportunities that expand and hone field, bench, computer, and communication skills are crucial to a successful graduate school experience (Grossman 1998; Schultz and VanDeHey 2012; O’Connor 2012). While these criteria are important, other factors, such as potential career advancement and out‐of‐pocket costs play a role in the prospective students’ decision on where to attend (Grossman 1998; Schultz and VanDeHey 2012).
