In addition to the appalling loss of life, the COVID-19 pandemic is already having a negative effect on food production, supply chains and food security although the medium to longer term impacts are difficult to predict. In spite of the disruption, the impacts on investment in agricultural research for development have been limited – research continues albeit with some interruption in field-based activities. Of note, e-conferencing has rapidly expanded providing opportunities for scientists to interact, network and share knowledge (Veldhuizen et al., 2020). Scientists have also taken advantage of additional time to take stock; consolidate research findings; and write papers. Submissions increased by 25% from 2019 with 500 papers received. Thirty-four papers were accepted after critical peer review. Outlook continued to give priority to global food production and food security through papers on technology adoption and seed systems as well as agroecology, impacts of COVID-19 on agriculture and livestock systems. Once again, I would like to thank all contributors for their interest in Outlook on Agriculture as well as reviewers and members of the editorial board for their help and advice during 2020.
