In 1959, Geoffrey Hill’s first book of poetry was published, the same year that saw Robert Lowell’s Life Studies. Hill’s book is strongly influenced by both Lowell and one of Lowell’s poetic mentors, Allen Tate; its title, For the Unfallen, provides a counter to Lowell’s poem “For the Union Dead,” which itself responds to Tate’s “Ode to the Confederate Dead.”1¹ But while Lowell, in Life Studies, was moving on stylistically, Hill was attached to the earlier Lowell, the Lowell who displays his mastery of conventional poetic forms, particularly in Lord Weary’s Castle (1946). In his ninth lecture as Professor of Poetry at Oxford, Hill claimed that this, “Lowell’s second book, produced largely under Tate’s aegis, is one of the finest verse collections since the work of Yeats’s final decade.”2²
