ABSTRACT

More than 8,100 people in San Diego live unsheltered on the street, with an additional 3,626 in temporary or emergency shelters. Efforts to address this humanitarian crisis have largely involved expanding existing models designed by government and social service providers that ironically exclude the voices of individuals with a lived experience of homelessness. The opportunity to store their belongings at the Transitional Storage Center provides a physical freedom to make choices, while liberating them from “dehumanizing” negative stereotyping. Using a constructivist grounded theory, the descriptive narratives gathered for this study allow for reframing the problems, solutions and perceptions of homelessness.
