Magnetic Properties of S = 1/2 Distorted Kagome Antiferromagnet CdCu3(OH)6Cl2 with Low-Symmetry Orbital Arrangement

The magnetic properties of the S = 1/2 distorted kagome antiferromagnet CdCu3(OH)6Cl2 have been studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and high-field magnetization measurements. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements indicated the absence of a magnetic long-range order down to 0.7 K, and the magnetization exhibited spin polarization of one-third of the total spins in a relatively weak magnetic field. The observed magnetic behavior of CdCu3(OH)6Cl2 was analyzed qualitatively by using a kagome model with three different exchange interactions that connects the regular kagome antiferromagnet and the isolated one-dimensional chain with inter-chain free spins. The orbital arrangement of Cu2+ ions induced a difference in the exchange interactions in the kagome lattice, and the interplay between the orbital and spin states gave rise to unique magnetic properties in the kagome antiferromagnet.
