The 49th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Immunology was changed to a 1-day online-only event, held on 8th December 2020 with the topic being ‘COVID-19 and Immunity’. In their Meeting Report, Reiko Shinkura et al. first summarize the talks given by 10 world leaders in their fields during two symposia. In the ‘Vaccines and Immunity’ symposium, Akiko Iwasaka and Alessandro Sette covered the role of various immune responses in SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19; George Gao outlined the control of COVID-19 and vaccine development in China; and Hironori Nakagami and Ken Ishii gave an update about the development of new vaccine strategies against the virus. In the ‘Cytokine Storm and Related Disease’ symposium, Tadamitsu Kishimoto, Josef Penninger and Yumiko Imai detailed the roles of IL-6, ACE-2 and lipid mediators during the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection; Hisashi Arase described factors that enhance infection; and Takanori Kanai discussed the development of a coronavirus task force in Japan. The authors then outline the comprehensive overview given by Masayuki Miyasaka about the current COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the authors summarize the Panel Discussion that brought the meeting to a close; the discussion covered various aspects including susceptibility among ethnic groups, immune responses to the virus and vaccine development.
