Cold briquetting of coke breeze with damp milling pretreatment as enhancement

ABSTRACT

A huge amount of coke breeze with its particles size smaller than 10 mm, is generated and accumulated during coke production, transportation and crushing process, which cannot be effectively used, causing wasting of coke resource. Cold briquetting of coke breeze was investigated in this study to produce formed coke with certain size and strength to satisfy the demands of metallurgical industry. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) and bentonite were added as binders, and damp milling was adopted to pretreat raw materials as enhancement. The effects and mechanisms of binders and pretreatment on the strength of green and dried briquettes were systematically studied in this work. The results showed that both the strength of green and dried briquette were improved greatly when using the mixtures of CMC-Na and bentonite as the composite binder, and they were further enhanced by the pretreatment of damp milling process. The drop strength of green briquettes was 18.2 times/0.5 m, and the compressive strength of dried briquettes of 100°C was 931.8 N/briquettes−1, when the coke breeze was cold briquetted with 0.5% CMC-Na and 6% bentonite after pretreating of damp milling.
