Oxidative Destruction of Bitumen in the Presence of Minerals

Abstract

The oxidation of BND 50/70 bitumen in the presence of minerals is investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The minerals present are quartz, calcite, hornblende, oligoclase, orthoclase perthite, potassium–sodium feldspar, muscovite, and granite. Analysis in terms of the thermal effect indicates that, in the range 200–340°C in an air flux, the oxidation (oxidative aging) of bitumen is 6–10 times faster in the presence of the minerals. With increase in silicon-dioxide content and decrease in calcium-oxide content in the minerals, the oxidation rate of the bitumen significantly increases.
