Study of a torsional link with radial springs: Periodic responses under base excitation

Torsional flexible links are essential for torque transmission in many industrial applications, such as automotive powertrains and turbomachinery. This work develops the formulation of a linear spring element attached between two rotating tracks. Then, the combination of elements is discussed, by generating torque curves that may present regions quasi-zero stiffness (QZS), negative stiffness, as well as a softening or hardening behavior. Each case is tested on a single degree-of-freedom system under base excitation. The results indicate that the modification on link parameters result in a huge variety of nonlinear responses, such as changes on the harmonic content and possible hysteresis effects according to the frequency of excitation.
