Creating Canadian English: The professor, the mountaineer, and a national variety of English (CCE) by Stefan Dollinger is a highly readable history of the codification of Canadian English (CanE) and Canadian lexicography that is based on novel archival research and Dollinger’s own research and professional dictionary writing experience. At its heart, the monograph’s nine chapters trace the context and minutiae of the writing of the first edition of the Dictionary of Canadianisms on historical principles (DCHP-1) (Avis, Crate, Drysdale, Leechman, Scargill & Lovell 1967) by way of biography of the “Bix Six”—the editorial team of the DCHP-1 and, as Dollinger suggests, the forefathers of the linguistic study of CanE. While each is given the spotlight at different points, Dollinger’s main attention is on the titular professor (Walter S. Avis) and mountaineer (Charles J. Lovell). He credits these two scholars for doing more for the analysis and public awareness of CanE than certainly any of their contemporaries and perhaps anyone since. The cast of characters might be less eccentric than those involved with the writing of the OED—there are no murders nor madness as documented in Winchester (1998)—but this monograph is not intended as a historical drama. Dollinger’s goal is clear: to honor the names Avis and Lovell and prevent their loss from our collective academic memory.
