Influence of Geotechnical Site Investigation in Horizontal Plane on Slope Reliability

In this paper, the effect of geotechnical site investigation attempts is investigated in a horizontal plane of stochastic cohesive-frictional soils for slope reliability evaluations. To this end, the influence of the horizontal scale of fluctuation (SOFh), assuming a constant vertical scale of fluctuation (SOFv = 1 m), on probabilistic slope stability analyses is evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation technique combining with a new dependable spatially and cross-correlated (between cohesion and friction) non-stationary random field algorithm. Furthermore, the importance of the number of boreholes in the horizontal plane of horizontally heterogeneous sites has been investigated to evaluate slope stability factor of safety (FS). The results have shown that more boreholes in the horizontal plane of horizontally heterogeneous sites return low risky slope stability evaluations. In the worst case of this study (i.e., the highest horizontal spatial inherent soil variability and the least number of investigating boreholes), the FS value of slope stability is computed about six percent more than the most realistic factor of safety, that is risky.
