Assessment of one-dimensional models used in the simulation of gas-liquid flows in vertical degassing columns

The present research aims to assess and analyze one-dimensional two-fluid models used in simulating gas-liquid dynamics and interphase transfers in degassing columns. The assessment of two-fluid models is based on benchmark measurement data carried out over a long period of time, both on dissolved gas concentrations in Lake Nyos at different depths and on the gas-liquid jet heights at the outlet of the degassing columns installed from 2001. The results of the numerical simulations with different two-fluid models were compared and their confrontation with the experimental data were discussed with respect to the sensitivity of the models to the different closures and hypotheses. The numerical analysis has led to a benchmark assessment of mono-dimensional two-fluid models in their capacity to account for the complexities associated with the different couplings between the dynamic aspects and interphase mass transfer phenomena that occur in degassing columns.
