Investigation of structural, optical and sensing performance of starch films reinforced with Ag nanoparticles

Abstract

Starch films embedded with Ag nanoparticles (NPs), fabricated via solution casting, have been characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and UV–visible spectroscopy. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak characteristic of Ag NPs is observed at 425 nm in the absorption spectra of the solution, while it appears in the range 438–449 nm for starch–Ag nanocomposites (Ncs). The size of the Ag NPs is 10.75 ± 0.8 nm as measured by TEM. Starch–Ag Nc films embedded with 0.50 wt% Ag NPs have minimal transmittance (1.3%) for electromagnetic radiation in the wavelength range 200–300 nm and 350–545 nm. Optical data was used to determine the refractive index, abbe number and dielectric function. Wemple-DiDomenico single oscillator model has been utilized to analyze the dispersion of refractive index and to investigate dispersion parameters. Sensitivity of the fabricated nanocomposite films to H2O2 has been demonstrated over a wide range (4 × 10−1–0.3 × 10−6 M).
