Using Sentinel-1A/B SAR data, Harvey (2021) produced an InSAR timeseries over White Island, New Zealand. The paper documents the apparent deformation through 2019, with particular focus on the mechanisms surrounding the fatal eruption on December 9 of that year. Based on the analysis, the author suggests that a sudden increase in the Line of Sight (LOS) range occurred two weeks prior to the eruption, with potential implications for hazard monitoring at White Island and globally equivalent volcanoes. More generally, a suggestion is made that dome contraction may presage eruptions. However, re-analysis of the datasets provided by the author indicates that the sudden change in LOS displacement, interpreted as a collapse of the dome, is simply an atmospheric artefact introduced by the choice of reference point on the island. Given the fatal nature of the eruption, and implications for forecasting phreatic eruptions more broadly, it is vitally important that the community carefully validate results that have forecasting implications, otherwise, spurious warnings may be communicated to the public. Based on the data presented in Harvey (2021), there is clearly no precursory deflation event in the build up to the eruption, in agreement with other datasets around this tragic event.
