ABSTRACT

Urban art is a relatively recent artistic realm whose salience has grown during the previous decade. In the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, the emergence of urban artists and the consolidation of this art movement is derived from local conditions and also from a highly favourable international environment. In international terms, street art has gradually become a city asset while at the same time it has grown in prestige and value for the contemporary art market. In the context of Lisbon, the part played by the local government was vital. The creation of a municipal structure specialised in promoting urban art was crucial for the legitimisation and sustainability of this art movement. Based on a range of interviews and the analysis of several documents, I shall discuss the opportunities created but also the emerging tensions.
