Abstract:

This article explores the configuration of a transatlantic abolitionist discourse produced in colonial Havana. Through the examination of Capuchin friar Epifanio de Moirans's Servi liberi seu naturalis mancipiorum libertatis iusta defensio (1682), the analysis shows how the intercultural exchange, experienced by the missionary in the Greater Caribbean, resulted in the construction of a provocative emancipation narrative that defies European coloniality. The study of Moirans's treatise is organized using three essential notions of Paul Gilroy's Black Atlantic: movement, transformation, and relocation. These three signs of displacement, instead of being used to solely describe black peoples' experiences due to the Atlantic slave trade, encompass Moirans's own journey and the way it transforms how Africans and their descendants were represented and legally defined.

Epifanio De Moirans
