The Mountain

We were sitting shoulder to shoulder looking at the firesin the canyon and I said something about distance, desire

moving from archive to digital, I was thinking of startingsomething, despite time zones or children, husbands

or wives. The clouds parted an instant, I thought I sawthe shadow of cumulus cross your face but it was only

trees branching like mapwork, the paths of our ancestors(Auschwitz, Manila, Manhattan) lit up in the night. Blue star

of smoke detector, green stars of the cat's eyes. Us, talkingand not touching until dawn, when we could no longer

see the fires but smelled them: brushwood, syntheticpolymers, skin. I closed my eyes. Then I stood up

and called an Uber, taking your face in my hands, unsurestill of what anchored us to the mountain. [End Page 28]
