THE ASSOCIATION

The eighty-seventh annual meeting of the Southern Historical Association is scheduled to take place at the Astor Crowne Plaza in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 3–6, 2021, Wednesday through Saturday.

At the close of the Association’s eighty-sixth virtual meeting on November 21, 2020, Steven Hahn, New York University, began his term as president. Given that there were no additional nominations, those proposed by the 2019 Nominating Committee and published in the May 2020 issue of the Journal were declared elected:

Vice President/President-Elect:

Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore, Yale University

Executive Council:

Malinda Maynor Lowery, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Charles W. McKinney Jr., Rhodes College

Adam Rothman, Georgetown University

The Executive Council also approved the nominations of William D. Carrigan, Rowan University, and Jeffery O. G. Ogbar, University of Connecticut, to four-year terms on the Board of Editors of the Journal of Southern History.

The Council elected the following to serve as the 2021 Nominating Committee: Manisha Sinha, University of Connecticut, chair; Edward E. Baptist, Cornell University; Pippa Holloway, University of Richmond; Tera W. Hunter, Princeton University; and Malinda Maynor Lowery, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The following awards were presented at the 2020 meeting:

Sydnor Award

The Charles S. Sydnor Award, recognizing a distinguished book in southern history published in an odd-numbered year (2019), was presented to two co-winners: Jacquelyn Dowd Hall, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for her book Sisters and Rebels: A Struggle for the Soul of America, published by W. W. Norton; and Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers, University of California, Berkeley, for her book They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South, published by Yale University Press. The selection committee consisted of Pippa Holloway, University of Richmond, chair; Karen L. Cox, University of North Carolina at Charlotte; and Joshua Rothman, University of Alabama.

Mitchell Award

The H. L. Mitchell Award, given in recognition of a distinguished book in southern labor history (published in 2018 or 2019), was presented to Jessica Wilkerson, University of West Virginia, for her book To Live Here, You Have to Fight: How Women Led Appalachian Movements for Social Justice, published by University of Illinois Press in 2019. The selection committee consisted of [End Page 163] Robert Korstad, Duke University, chair; Michele Gillespie, Wake Forest University; and J. Todd Moye, University of North Texas.

Wall Award

The Bennett H. Wall Award, given for a distinguished book in southern business or economic history (published in 2018 or 2019), was awarded to Shennette Garrett-Scott, University of Mississippi, for her book Banking on Freedom: Black Women in U.S. Finance before the New Deal, published by Columbia University Press in 2019. The selection committee consisted of Jonathan Daniel Wells, University of Michigan, chair; Sharon Ann Murphy, Providence College; and Sean Adams, University of Florida.

Green-Ramsdell Award

The Fletcher M. Green and Charles W. Ramsdell Award for the best article published in the Journal of Southern History over a two-year period (in 2018 or 2019) was awarded to Aaron R. Hall, University of Minnesota, for his article “Public Slaves and State Engineers: Modern Statecraft on Louisiana’s Waterways, 1833–1861,” which appeared in the August 2019 issue of the Journal. The selection committee consisted of Aaron Sheehan-Dean, Louisiana State University, chair; James Broomall, Shepherd University; and Adrienne Monteith Petty, College of William and Mary.

Woodward Dissertation Prize

The C. Vann Woodward Dissertation Prize for the best dissertation in southern history completed in 2019 was awarded to Justin Mark Randolph, Texas State University, for his Yale University dissertation, “Civil Rights Arrested: Black Freedom Movements and Mass Incarceration in Rural Mississippi, 1938–1980.” The selection committee consisted of Leslie Rowland, University of Maryland, chair; Ann Short Chirhart, Indiana State University; and Françoise N. Hamlin, Brown University.

Submissions for this year’s Woodward Prize are invited. Dissertations in southern history completed and defended in 2020 are eligible for the annual prize. Application requirements can be found in the advertisement in this issue of...
