Abstract:“Coronavirus departs from some conventions of the picture book genre. For instance, it does not have named characters, although some of the same children appear regularly in the illustrations. In addition, it does not tell a narrative. Rather, the question/answer format makes readers perceive they are hearing professional information delivered in a straightforward manner. This informational purpose requires many more words per page than in most picture books…. Five words and phrases are bolded throughout the book: virus, completely new, antibodies, ventilator, and vaccine. This emphasis builds vocabulary and provides context for when children will hear these words in other contexts.”
