Both The Massey Murder, by Charlotte Gray, and Alias Grace, by Margaret Atwood, enact a metaphorical examination of how murder reveals both the social attitudes and moral prurience exhibited toward servant women who kill their employers. This essay addresses two real, historical crimes in Toronto, their depiction in a novel and a work of nonfiction, and discusses ideology, class, gender, spectacle, and media coverage in light of their deployment in the subsequent reporting, treatment, trials, and narrative resolutions.
