A fifth wave? The changing nature of boomtown research

This work provides a valuable review and collection of boomtown research from the past half century including a proposed new fifth wave. Boomtowns are rapid growth communities, often associated with natural resource development (e.g., gold, coal, oil/gas) and generally rural. Also, in its discussion of late modernity, the current undertaking answers the call put forth by Donnermeyer and DeKeseredy (2014) to challenge conventional theoretical views of resource extraction communities as simply experiencing ‘disruptions’.
