Effect of friction stir processing passes on wear properties of Al-6061-T6 alloy

The current investigation aims at understanding the effect of friction stir processing (FSP) on wear behavior of Al-6061 T6 alloy. The study is aimed to understand the effect of processing without the addition of the reinforcement media. The variables of FSP are number of passes and direction of processing passes. Wear testing has been done for the processed samples and the unprocessed base metal. The processed samples show improvement in the wear behavior when compared to the base metal. With increase in number of processing passes, wear increases. With direction reversal between two consecutive passes, wear decreases. The enhanced surface properties of the processed samples are attributed to grain refinement, breaking and better dispersion of Mg2Si precipitates after processing. An interesting observation made is that the standard error in wear measurement is reduced for the processed samples as compared to the base metal, indicating uniform surface properties for processed samples.
