In this issue, a diverse range of time periods, subjects, and locations is represented in the four articles—from the mid-nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries, biographical to institutional and cultural studies, and locations set in the United Kingdom and the United States. Melissa Grady’s biographical study of George N. Heller has a special place in the context of this journal. George founded the journal in 1980 as The Bulletin of Historical Research in Music Education. Shortly before that, in 1978, recommended by his mentor and former teacher Allen Britton, he served as the first national chair of the History Special Research Interest Group (SRIG). With co-author Bruce Wilson, he wrote a chapter on historical research for the first Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning published in 1992. His lifelong commitment to historical research as teacher, mentor, author, advocate, scholar, and editor earns him a privileged place in the annals of music education history. Drawing heavily on oral histories of those who knew and worked with George, as well as unpublished materials accessible at the University of Kansas, photographs taken at various stages of Heller’s life, and his published works, the author creates a vivid portrait and dynamic story of George Heller, revealing his humanity and unique personality as well as documenting his professional achievements.
