Cvajner’s Soviet Signoras is the result of more than a decade of ethnographic work among a community of middle-aged women from countries of the Former Soviet Union (FSU) who emigrated to a northern Italian town (referred to as “Alpinetown”) during the 1990s. These migrant women found work as caregivers for elderly middle- and working-class Italians. As a Croatian immigrant who had entered Italy with refugee status and studied Russian, Cvajner shared enough kinship with the “Soviet Signoras” to be accepted as a trusted member of their community.
