Conventional economic history has taken something of a backseat in history programmes worldwide and India is no exception. Something like an involuntary shudder passes through the graduate student faced with a table or a graph of wages, prices, national income indexes or five-year moving averages of population increases; the impulse is to quickly turn the page. Accompanied also by a discernible shift, and narrowing interest, in questions of labour and class consciousness, whether in the political or academic domain, many earlier concerns associated with production processes have had to take refuge in the broader remit of social and cultural history.
