As I write this editorial, we are now in the fourth week of a worldwide shutdown, with lockdowns and shelter-at-home orders throughout the globe, and I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and by the destruction of livelihoods for so many. With the special risks presented by students working together in close quarters, institutions of higher education were faced with the problem of what to do with little notice. Residential campuses had to decide when and how to close dormitories. Faculty had to learn how to move courses online very quickly in order to preserve some semblance of continuity. Some colleges and universities already had plans in place for dealing with a crisis, although the magnitude of this one has been unprecedented—a vast understatement. Others knew how to cope with closing for a day or two or even a week or so with a weather event such as a hurricane. But with the Covid-19 pandemic, the challenges have been gargantuan.
