In Ogura (1997), I made an investigation on the beginning and development of the begin to construction. Since Old English (OE) onginnan/beginnan denoted the ingressive aspect and the non-prefixed ginnan came to be used as a preterite auxiliary, the establishment of MnE begin should be considered to have undergone a twofold process: the development of ingressive begin and the replacement of ginnan/gan by periphrastic do/did. As the twofold process seemed to have taken place sometime between late Old and early Middle English, this article focuses on Ormulum and Laʒamon’s Brut in order to find the choice of verbs in the ‘begin/gan (to) infinitive’ construction.1¹
