A while ago, Nicolas Kiessling drew our attention to some verses of Lucretius that Robert Burton translated, and untidily scribbled, in one of his books (Oxford, Christ Church Library, f.8.64).1¹ These verses—being De rerum natura, III.79–81—remain of interest, since the translation Burton drafted here soon found its way into the first edition of The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621), as well as all subsequent editions. Burton makes an interesting and unnoticed change to the original Lucretian text, the motivation for which can be found in this draft. Kiessling also asks two questions of relationship. How is the page containing these annotations bibliographically related to the entire Sammelband in which it is found? And what intellectual relation do the verses bear to Burton’s reading of the works contained in this volume? Kiessling proposes a partial answer to the first problem; he leaves the second unsettled. I here propose full solutions to both questions, which are related.
