Research into English alliterative verse has seen progress on a number of fronts in recent years, summed up by a trio of Cambridge University Press monographs on the subject by the present author (2016), Ian Cornelius (2017), and Geoffrey Russom (2017).1¹ Naturally enough, these books focus on the long Old English and Middle English poems that have always been at the center of scholarly inquiry. In my book, I included two appendices listing little-studied short Old English and Early Middle English alliterative poems, but I did not perform the same bibliographical work for fourteenth-, fifteenth-, and sixteenth-century alliterative poetry.2² The present article remedies this lacuna. Although Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Winner and Waster, and William Langland’s Piers Plowman are widely read and taught, and other long poems, such as Mum and the Sothsegger and Scottish Field, are well known to specialists, there exist a number of short and fragmentary alliterative poems from the same period that have garnered far less attention. Many of these had not been noticed, printed, or edited at the time of the initial publication of the last comprehensive checklist of poems in this metre, that of J. P. Oakden (1930; 2nd edn, 1968).3³ Cornelius and I discussed the short and fragmentary poems here and there as they became relevant in our arguments. (The Middle English portion of Russom’s book focuses exclusively on Gawain.) The purpose of this checklist is to gather together these poems, twenty-two in all, in order to facilitate further research. This checklist complements Richard H. Osberg’s handlist of short alliterating, rhyming, syllable-counting (‘metrical’) Middle English poems,4⁴ which do not belong to the alliterative tradition according to the consensus metrical typology developed by Cornelius, Russom, and myself, building on work by Thomas Cable and Hoyt N. Duggan.5⁵
