The prophecies attributed to Thomas of Erceldoune are all but impossible to study in isolation. Their borders with the broader English prophetic tradition are extremely porous, and there exist a significant number of texts whose relationships, influences, and interdependencies have not yet been fully worked out. Examples multiply, but The Prophisies of Rymour, Beid, and Marlyng, Als Y Yod on ay Monnday and the Whole Prophesie of Scotland, England, and Somepart of France stand out as particularly linked texts. Each begins with a first-person narrator traveling along a road and meeting a strange man, of whom the narrator asks tidings. It is clear that something of the otherworld adheres to the stranger since he brings to the narrator (and the reader) news and visions of the future. All of these texts have been understudied and poorly edited; none has benefitted from a formal critical edition since the end of the nineteenth century, and Als Y Yod has never been properly edited at all. Unsurprising, then, that a critical feature of one of these works has passed without comment: namely, a precise mechanism for the transference of prophetic ability from the stranger to the narrator and its connection to broader Scottish tradition.
